The Fairground Association of Great Britain was founded in 1978, and
is now the UK's leading club for fairground enthusiasts, with members as
far a field as Australia and North America.
The main objectives of the Association are to provide a focal
point for those whose hobby is the travelling fair; to support the
cause of the travelling showman and to promote a better understanding
of fairs among the general public.
The Fairground Mercury, our
quarterly journal sent free to all members, caters for a broad spectrum
of interests: what's new on the fairground, historical studies, transport
and model making.
Among the regular features are
'Roundabouts', a listing of all new rides and those that have
changed hands, and The Model
Tober', a series providing technical advice for model makers, written
alternately by two of the country's top model experts.
TheMercury also enables
members to advertise free-of-charge their sales and wants.
Each year we organise events at three of the major
back-end fairs - Nottingham, Ilkeston and Loughborough - to
provide
members with the opportunity to meet up, display their models or operate
sales stands.
The Loughborough event (held
right alongside the fair) and is now one of the country's principal exhibitions
of fairground models.
The FAGB's own sales stand, which
stocks a wide range of fairground publications, appears at all three
events as well as other kindred events during the year.
In addition to the Mercury, the Association also produces
occasional publications written by members.
Gallopers a survey of all surviving (and
recently-built) sets of Galloping Horses rides, now in its second edition
is widely
recognised, as the authoritative work on the subject.
